For many, the laid-back, authentic Hammond Organ-led sound of the James Taylor Quartet exemplified the acid jazz groove of the late 1980s as captured here on The Collection. Formed out of the ashes of ace London garage band the Prisoners and the Daggermen, the JTQ--led by the Jimmy Smith-loving Taylor himself--soon gained themselves a reputation for their exuberant live shows. This album is drawn from the JTQ's three Polydor albums at the turn of the 1990s, and serves as a fine introduction to their oeuvre: faithful covers ("I Say a Little Prayer", the signature tune "Starsky and Hutch"), bonus live tracks and a funky mix of instrumentals and vocal originals. --Jerry Thackray
